Engineering students inspired at major live construction site

Last week, a group of eight of our engineering students visited the Porthaven Care Home Project in Kidlington, organised through Open Doors.

Open Doors offers a unique chance to see behind the scenes
at major ‘live’ construction sites across England, Scotland and Wales. Visitors are given the opportunity to discover how the buildings and structures in their community are constructed and find out about the diverse range of skills and professions needed on site.

The scheme in Kidlington comprises a new build 70-bed care home. The project includes the design, construction and complete fit out of a new build two-storey building, spanning 3596m2, within a programme period of 60 weeks.

Students were given a brief introduction to the project, including the different stages of the progress that has been made and the challenges faced on the site throughout the process. Following a health and safety briefing, the students were then given a tour of the site and were then taken through the process of the project in more detail.

At the end of the session, the students were given an insight into the range of opportunities available in construction and some of the different paths they could take if they are interested in the industry. It was an eye-opening experience for them as they were introduced to a variety of roles and options that they didn’t know existed. We are grateful to Open Doors for such an inspiring visit and look forward to taking students again next year.
